You mentioned great fries at the
snack bar in Convention Hall, but you couldn't remember
the name. I think you mean The Miramar Grill. It was
located at the south end of the building on the beach
side. It was owned - at least in the mid to late 1960s
by Gus Sariotos (I'm not sure of the spelling. It was a
Greek name) His daughter's name was Becky. She was
married to a guy named Harry Alekis (SP?). There was
also a granddaughter named Diana. As Gus had to be his
his seventies then, it's more than likely the mom or her
daughter owned the place in the 1970s.
I worked as a grillman/busboy the summer of 1967.
Back in those days, Asbury was a stop-off point for the
rock tours between NYC and Philly. I remember seeing the
Stones that summer, with the Standells as one of the
openers. Another show that summer was Herman's Hermits;
the two opening acts were The Bluez Magoos and The Who!
We rarely paid to go into concerts.
It was standard practice that a burger and fries
and a soft drink given to the Asbury cops doing security
on the outside promenade (closed during the shows) got
you in. As you were more-or-less backstage at that point
- and backstage passes didn't exist yet - you had the
run of the place. The following summer I worked as an
usher for the Walter Reade Theater chain. Most the time
I worked the Lyric, by Palace Amusements. All
that's dead and gone now, ain't it? Rob

I'm 49 years old. We went for 3 weeks to Asbury Park
every summer. I have such warm memories. I loved it
there!!! I loved the beach near the Convention Hall, the
Empress Motel, the rides, the lights, the auctions that
were held there, delicious foods. eating breakfast in
Newbury's on Cookman Avenue, shopping in The Canadian
Shop, listening to the music that was held on the
boardwalk, the great 4th of July fireworks, Planter's
peanuts, the Villa Roma Restaurant, the movie theatre
with the stars on the ceiling, etc....I was heartbroken
to see how it all has changed. My parents went there on
their honeymoon over 55 years ago. Eventually, they
moved to Ocean Grove. The Ocean Grove that was a nice
religious town then, not the yuppie place that it is
now...so sad how things change....

I remember, as kids, between ages of 15 to 20 years of
age
(then went in the service)how the majority of time on
fridays and saturdays, we would go to the boardwalk
and go on the rides. Eat Mrs Jays hot dogs, and
walk the beach or the boardwalk. Especially the fun
house. That was our meeting place. We would come
up from manasquan and sea girt, three and four of us
at a time. After we grew older, we would bring our
dates to asbury. We were disheartened by what we
saw on a visit there in the 80's. We decided to
leave after ten minutes before the view ruined our
wonderful memories of asbury. We hope that the City
fathers will restore this wonderful heritage that
should never be destroyed. We remember asbury
boardwalk from the thirties as a tot thru the forties
and the early fifties, when I went to the korean war.
We are coming to Jersey for a reunion in October of
this year. And of course as a magnet would
draw you, we will check the boardwalk once again.

NAME FOR A NICKEL SIX FOR A QUARTER IT COST $10.50 TO
COVER THE WHEEL. THE ANIMALS COST $5.00. MOST YEARS THE
SEASONS RENT WAS MADE BY JULY 4TH AND NO-ONE SLEEP IN
THE PLACE NOR DID ANYONE EVER SKIP TOWN IN THE MIDDLE OF
THE NIGHT
THERE WAS SPIKE MUSTO'S, DUCKY'S, TAYLOR PORK
ROLL,SAMMY'S FRENCH FRIES, UNCLE HENRY'S
AUCTION,FASINATION,THE NATATORIUM,KHOR'S, WONDER BAR,
MRS JAY'S(NO STONE PONY) THE STUDENT PRINCE, HULABALOO,
PEPPERMINT LOUNGE, PLANTERS PEANUTS, THE MONTERAY AND
THE BERKLEY.
IT WAS A GREAT CITY AT A GREAT TIME.

the Albion Hotel bar closed.. was called the ZULU
room. Then changed to the EL MORROCCAN . Don't
forget the MARINE GRILL, WONDER BAR, PIZZA SLICE,
HULLABALU, STUDENT PRINCE (WHERE BRUCE REALLY GOT
HIS START) EMPIRE BAR, I AM OLDER NOW AND
WOULD LOVE TO BE 23 AND BACK IN ASBURY PARK AT MRS
JAYS HAVING A BEER ....
