Sandra McCarthy - The Ballard Methodist Church
My mother's(born 1914)parents, grandparents and assorted kin were
Asbury Park residents. My paternal grandfather, Harry M. Steelman,
was an architect/builder who worked on or built many buildings in
Asbury Park including one of the Theatres, possibly the Mayfair. My
paternal great grandfather, Ezekiah Steelman, founded the the
congregation which is now the Ballard Methodist Church. My maternal
great grandfather, Henry Herbert, owned a paint store.
My grandparents built their home on Fifth Ave when the lakes were
still tidal. My grandmother held a lantern so he could build at night
after work (we now think but are not sure that the house was/is a kit
house brought in by train).
I spent my first ten summers (born 9/41 - 42 - 52) in Asbury during
the war and after. Those summers were wonderful. Even after '52 we
always spent Easter at my grandparents and participated in the Easter
Parade.
Anyhow I have many memories and some photos I could share BUT, most
importantly, my aunt (born 1912) is still alive and could tell many
tales of the old Asbury Park including when it was the summer White
House.
Please let me know if you have any interest.
Debbie Gibson Video Shoot

Hi! My name is Charleen Frankie and I was in a video which was the first video that Debbie Gibson ever filmed for the song, "Only in my Dreams". I played her mother in the video and I have a copy of it. IT was filmed in Asbury on the beach with saxaphone sections filmed in the Casino and a large portion of the video was filmed in the Merry-Go-Round next to the Casino while Debbie Gibson sang the song, "Only in my Dreams". Also, I remember skating in the Casino with my Dad and catching the brass ring on the Merry-Go-Round in the Palace Amusements. The Video is from 1987 when Debbie Gibson was 16 and so was my daughter. So Debbie is now 32 and so is my daughter. She and her friends watched the Video being taped and there was also a Priest in the Video with whom I still keep in contact. It might be nice to have a reunion of the people in the Video. Also, I just published an article in the "Coaster" about saving the Casino because it was such a beautiful landmark. Please let me know if I can be of any help. I live in Interlaken and want so much to help with the revitalization of Asbury Park. Also, I was Miss NJ-World in 1966 and made several appearances in Asbury Park. Sincerely, Charleen M. Frankie

Norma Jackson - recalling the 40's

It was a paradise for young people in the 40s a great evening could be had for a little money.  Bumper cars carousel rides and lots of sounds from the boardwalk and laughter too.  Its a sad sight for anyone with memories however I like the walk and the only thing left is that big cement slab by the casino that lets me enter a world of bygone days in my memory.  Hope it becomes a new stepping stone for future memories to others.

Nancy on the Boardwalk in the 60's

Hi!  I remember going to AP with my Aunt Helen and cousin, Judy.  I was born in 1959, so I guess I was around 7 or 8 years old.  I remember riding the carousel and reaching for the brass ring!  Don't know that I ever got one...I think I was too short!  I remember the bumper cars.  Mostly, I remember an "auction house" somewhere along the boards.  Aunt Helen used to take us there.  They would pass out paper bags and you would bid on stuff.  If this jogs anyone else's memory, please remind me in detail.  I was young and not sure I remember it all.  As far as concerts, I saw The Carpenters at Convention Hall.  I also saw Bobby Goldsboro.  I haven't lived in NJ for 7 years.  I was raised in Toms River.  You have no idea how much I miss the boards, especially SeasideFlorida is beautiful, but, they just don't have boardwalks.
