A visitor from Newark

My story about working in the Pokerino Palace referred to Olympic
Park, in Irvington. I have many fond memories of Asbury Park.
Earlier this week I had a yen for a Mrs. Jay's hot dog or a Taylor
pork sandwich from their stand on the boardwalk.

Greetings... from Cape Cod, MA ... GREAT site you've got going,
TONS of potential! ... though might I suggest, NO Asbury Park rock
n' roll site is complete without Tony Amato, aka: Boccigalupe (Bocci
& The Badboys) .... AmyMac www.boccigalupe.com

A 1960's-1970's person who made Waffles on the Asbury Boardwalk...
|
|
What a travesty!!! Waffles and ice cream was much
more than a warmed over frozen waffle with ice cream in the
middle. The waffle was made fresh on a sizzling hot waffle
iron. The secret recipe for the waffle was just that -- a
secret... with cinnamon and sugar. I have been all over the
country and I have yet to taste a waffle as good. You have
done this culinary delight a disservice. By the way, I was
born and raised in Asbury Park; I worked on the boardwalk for 4
summers in a row in the late 60's early 70's and I know the person
who came up with the secret recipe for the Waffles. SEE

Franki Vali, Ducky's - Dee
|
Grew
up in Asbury in the 60s and 70s and spent many evenings on
the boardwalk. My favorite rides were the
tilt-a-whirl, mixing cups (or bowls), the ride that had the
bubbles (can't remember the name of it), the train. Played
lots of Skee-ball in Convention Hall. Saw many
concerts there, but best memories were seeing Frankie
Valli & the Four Seasons many times. How I
looked forward to August, I knew I'd be at the concert!
Boardwalk had the best food - going to "Ducky's"
for the hot dogs that snapped when you bit them, frozen
custard or the juice at Kohr's, Criterion candy, ice cream
sundaes at Howard Johnson's. I moved to Florida
in 1992, and last visited Asbury in 1999. I cried when
I saw how badly the town had deteriorated. I was
standing on the boardwalk, in the middle of a July day, and
counted a handful of people on the beach. No
concessions were open, or even in business. I'm
glad I have wonderful memories of that special city. "...this
is my hometown...." Dee DeSimone Rizzo
